Help for 3500 BOOKS on CD ROM
How
do I open the files? How
do I use the index to find the title or author that I want? How can I open
just one file? How
can I unzip the whole CD to my hard drive?
For these
questions and more... read the following step by step
instructions.
How do I open the files? You need to first
install the "WINZIP" program that is on the disc. You can then use
this program to unzip a single text. Or you can install the program called
"Alex50". Both of these files are found in the "extras" directory.
Go to your "start" icon on the bottom left hand of your
screen. (Win 98 and Win 95). Right click on that. And then click on
"Explore". Go to your CD ROM drive (usually the "D:" drive) Click
on the "+" in front of the drive name. Then click on the "+" in front
of the "Gutenberg" directory. Then click on the "+" in front of the
"Extras" directory. Click on the "unzip" directory. Then double
click on "Winzip80". If you want to be able to unzip the whole disc to
your hard drive then use "Alex50". If you just want to unzip one file
at a time....use the "Winzip80". Either way, I recommend installing
"Winzip80" so that you have this on your hard drive when you want to open
any single file. Double click on either "Alex50" or "Winzip80". The
installation process will begin for that program. Follow the on screen
directions. It will guide you through the installation process.
Once you have installed "Winzip80", you can unzip any
file on the disc just by double clicking on it (Open "explore" as
instructed above and then open the "Gutenberg" directory. Then open the
"zipped" directory. Double click on any zipped file in this directory.
Because you installed "Winzip80" as your default zip file handler, the
file will automatically cause Winzip80 to open and walk you thru the steps
to unzip the file and save it where you choose to.
You
should use the "index" file to find the book you want to open.
Here's how: Using "explore", open your CD ROM drive (click on the "+"
in front of your CD ROM drive ....usually drive "D".) Then click on the
"+" in front of "Gutenberg", then click on the "+" in front of the
directory called "extras", then click on the folder called "Index". In
that directory you will see one file called "index". Double click on that.
A screen will open asking you if you want "WordPad" to open. Click "Yes".
Once that file is open you may search for an author or title using the
string search feature of that program (Ctrl F). Type in the name of the
author or title and hit "Enter". In this way you can find the filename for
any author or title. Once you find the file name of the book you want
.....open the directory "zipped" and find that file and double click on
it. Winzip will open the file for you to read.
If you want to use the "Alex50" program to unzip
multiple files or your whole CD ROM, install it using the instructions
above. Then just open that program from your "start" button and
then "programs" and look for "Aladdin Expander 5.0" and click on that
to open. Once you open that, the help menu will guide you through its use.
